Update: Response to Allegations of Assault Involving Rep. Alex Ikwechegh

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Abuja, FCT | Tuesday, October 29, 2024 – In our commitment to keeping the public informed regarding the incident involving Rep. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh and Citizen Stephen Abuwatseya, the House of Representatives provides the following update:

1. The matter was addressed during today’s plenary, the first legislative session following the incident.
2. The Leader of the House, Rep. Prof. Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo), raised a Point of Order (Matter of Privilege) in accordance with Order 6 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives, seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader, Rep. Aliyu Sani Madaki (NNPP, Kano). He presented arguments on why the matter required the attention and necessary action of the House.
3. In his submission, Rep. Ihonvbere emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity and credibility of the institution and stressed that appropriate steps not only need to be taken but must also be seen to be taken. Consequently, he moved that the issue be referred to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
4. Rep. Ikwechegh, coming under Order 8, Rule 6 (Matter of Personal Explanation), expressed a heartfelt apology to Citizen Stephen Abuwatseya, the Nigeria Police, the House of Representatives, the National Assembly, and the Nigerian public. Acknowledging the regrettable nature of his actions, he confirmed that he and Citizen Abuwatseya are pursuing alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, to which he is fully committed.
5. Rep. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos), in his contribution, acknowledged the heartfelt apology but urged that the provisions of the House Rules on such matters be adhered to. He further called on fellow lawmakers to conduct themselves with integrity and respect toward all Nigerians, reminding members that citizens hold authority over their representatives.
6. Presiding over plenary, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu reiterated the House’s internal processes, beginning with a thorough investigation to ensure fair hearing and justice. He put the substantive motion to a vote, which was unanimously carried by the House.
7. The matter has thus been referred to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which has been mandated to report back within two weeks for further legislative action.

The 10th Assembly remains steadfast in its dedication to accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct, which are fundamental to our duty and responsibility to our constituents and all Nigerians.
