EVIL CANNOT BE OVERCOME BY EVIL BUT ONLY BY GOOD, SO DO NOT BE OVERCOME BY EVIL BUT OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD

One thing that is catchy in “Our Lord’s Prayer” in today’s gospel is the way Jesus couched it in plural terms. We cannot pray the Lord’s Prayer in a singular term because when we say the Lord’s Prayer, we pray for others as well as for ourselves.
We are one family under God, and there can be no salvation for us independent of others. The intersession of Abraham in the first reading shows how to overcome evil without doing further evil in the process. Evil has to be resisted. However, it has to be done in such a way that we do not do more evil in the process. Evil can not be overcome by evil but only by good.
This story reveals a lot about the mercy of God. I pray for you in today’s Mass for the grace and the gift of prayer, which is the source and life-wire of our being as Christians.
Happy Sunday, beloved in Christ!
