Tomorrow will be noted in history as a day that justice took its place in Enugu State. It may also be remembered as a day of mourning for lovers of the tenets of democracy.
We seek absolute truth. We seek justice. We seek progress for our state and our people. We seek the establishing principles of fairness.
Democracy provides that the people are preeminent. It is for their sake that authors of democracy worked and died defending it.
Law forms the true bases of justice and as they say, the foundations of justice can be traced to the notions of social stability, interdependence, and equal dignity. As the ethicist John Rawls has pointed out, “the stability of a society—or any group, for that matter depends upon the extent to which the members of that society feel that they are being treated justly.” Anything outside this is an invitation to chaos.
It is our hope that we remember this chapter in our lives with a sense of joy and pride. We also hope to be proud and able to tell our children yet unborn that there was a time we had judges who were able to give us justice in a situation of hopelessness.
Justice should not only be done. Justice should be seen as having been done. In that way, the society grows and makes progress. In that way again, our faith in democracy would not have been dashed.
Philosophers say and I quote, “Peace cannot exist without justice, justice cannot exist without fairness, fairness cannot exist without development, development cannot exist without democracy, democracy cannot exist without respect for the identity and worth of cultures and peoples.” Unquote.
