All is now set for Engr. Prof. Emenike C. Ejiogu for “The 20th Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture” (HMML) at Princess Alexanderia Auditorium (PAA), UNN, slated for Friday, the 3rd and Saturday the 4th of May, 2024 in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
In a statement signed by Engr. Prof. Emenike C. Ejiogu, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering made available to journalists in Nsukka on Monday, it showed the theme of the 20th HMML as “Harnessing Practical Engineering Solutions for Sustainable Economic Development”.
According to the statement from the Board of the Faculty, in line with the theme, the following will be the highlights of the 20th HMML:
1) Gown meets Town (3rd & 4th May) – Technical Exhibition of Practical Projects of Staff and Students of the Faculty of Engineering and interested private/public sector companies and organizations, with products and services relevant to sustainable economic growth
2) Technical Symposium and Panel Discussion (3rd May, morning hours).
Others include:
3) Alumni Homecoming Events (3rd May, afternoon/evening) 4) Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture (4th May).
It would be recalled that the HMML is the flagship bieniel lecture of the Faculty of Engineering, UNN, by a speech/resolution of the Faculty Board made at its meeting of October 5, 1978. The Board established a bi-annual memorial lecture series to be known as “The Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture (HMML).” This lecture series is one of the oldest lecture series in any Nigerian University.
The lecture was established in honour of Herbert Heelas Macaulay, the Father of Nigerian Nationalism, who trained and practiced as an engineer, architect and surveyor, when there was very little distinction between these disciplines.
The HMML is used to honour lecturers, who in many cases, must have made outstanding contributions to national development through Engineering, just as the late Herbert did, adding that some of the past lecturers at the HMML, include Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd), Engr. (Dr.) Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Engr. Maj. Gen. Mamman Kontangora (Rtd), His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule and a host of other prominent and philanthropic Nigerians.
In line with the past accomplished and distinguished HMML lecturers, the 20th edition of the HMML will feature an accomplished and distinguished Engr. and entrepreneur, Engr. Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, the MD/CEO of the Nigerian Satellite Communications Limited, noting that she will be the first ever female to feature as a HMML lecturer.
Interestingly, she has chosen a very timely and appealing title for her lecture, which is, “Championing Innovation: A look at Digital Transformation and Economic Diversification in Nigeria”. The lead speaker for the HMML will be the DG/CEO of the Nigerian Hydrological Agency, Engr. Clement Nze, while the Chairman of the occasion is Royal Academy of Engineering Practice Professor at the University of Leads, UK, Engr. (Prof.) Dr. Paul Eke, a professor of digital twins and systems Engineering.
The entire staff and students of the Faculty of Engineering therefore, invite all stakeholders and the general public to witness the 2024 HMML memorable events organized by the Faculty of Engineering, UNN.
