Portugal and the entire football world are mourning the tragic deaths of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, following a fatal car accident earlier this week. The siblings were laid to rest on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in their hometown in Portugal, in an emotional burial ceremony attended by family, friends, teammates, and fans.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred on Monday evening as Jota and his brother were traveling to visit relatives in northern Portugal. According to local authorities, their car veered off the road and collided with a tree in what was described as a horrific crash. Emergency services arrived promptly, but both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The news has left a deep scar in the hearts of millions worldwide, as the brothers were described as inseparable and beloved in their community.
Two wooden caskets bearing the remains of the brothers were carried by pallbearers, including close friends and relatives, into the church for a final farewell.

In heartbreaking scenes, their mother, who has now lost both her children at once, was inconsolable as mourners gathered around to offer their support. “The pain is unbearable. She has lost her world,” a family friend said.
Fans lined the streets outside the church, holding flowers and wearing Liverpool and Portugal jerseys in honor of the football star.
Tributes Pour In
Liverpool Football Club released an official statement:
“We are devastated by the tragic passing of our player Diogo Jota and his younger brother. Diogo was not only a brilliant footballer but also a kind and humble soul who touched everyone around him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this unthinkable time.”
Portugal’s national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his sorrow on Instagram, writing:
“It’s hard to find the words. Rest in peace, my brother. May you and your brother find eternal peace together. Portugal will never forget you.”
Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah also shared his heartbreak, saying:
“We’ve lost one of our own. Diogo brought so much light to our team and to the lives of everyone he met. Rest well, my friend.”
Diogo Jota, 28, began his career at Paços de Ferreira before moving to Atlético Madrid, Wolves, and later Liverpool, where he became a key player under Jurgen Klopp. Known for his explosive pace, sharp finishing, and versatility on the pitch, Jota played a crucial role in Liverpool’s domestic and European campaigns.
He was also a vital member of the Portuguese national team, representing his country in multiple major tournaments and helping them to several memorable victories.
His brother, although not in the professional football limelight, was described as his biggest supporter and confidant.
Perhaps the most heart-wrenching element of this tragedy is the grief of their mother, who now faces life without her only children. “To lose one child is unimaginable, but to lose both at the same time… there are no words,” said a mourner.
As Portugal bids farewell to two young lives cut tragically short, tributes continue to pour in from fans, football clubs, and players across the world. The brothers’ legacy of love, unity, and passion for life will remain etched in the hearts of those who knew them.
The Jota family has requested privacy during this extremely difficult time.
