OUR PAIN CAN BRING US CLOSER TO GOD; IN THAT IN COPING WITH IT WE CAN EXPERIENCE HIS POWER AND LOVE

2 min read

What we can learn from today’s passion narrative according to Mark is that suffering can be of benefit to us. Suffering can purify our soul and strengthen our character. It can enable us to tap rich sources of strength within ourselves. It can also soften our hearts and enable us to empathize with other sufferers.

The value of suffering does not lie in the pain of it but in what the sufferer makes out of it. We don’t always have control over what happens to us but we do have control over how we react to what happen to us.

Today’s liturgy reminds us that we should not regard suffering as a punishment from God. God allows us to suffer so that we can derive good from suffering. Our pain can bring us closer to God in that in coping with it we can experience his power and love.

The example of Jesus in today’s passion narrative says it all. Jesus did not die to save us from suffering rather he died to teach us how to suffer. The road of suffering has changed after Christ’s encounter with suffering. Even though it led to Calvary, it doesn’t end there but culminates at Easter Sunday.

My dearly beloved of Christ, I don’t know the kind of suffering you are in now but take consolation from Christ’s passion today and believe that yours too will surely end in a victorious resurrection Sunday through Christ Our Lord Amen!

Happy Palm Sunday as I wish you all favours and Grace’s of the HOLY WEEK!
