Prof. Simon Ortuanya Makes History as First Nsukka Indigene Appointed UNN Vice Chancellor

News reaching us confirms that Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, former Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Prof. Ortuanya hails from Ohodo in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. His appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of the university, as he becomes the first Nsukka indigene to occupy the position since the institution’s establishment in 1960 — over six decades ago. He also becomes the 16th Vice Chancellor of the prestigious university.

Prof. Ortuanya’s academic journey began at Nsukka High School, where he obtained his West African School Certificate. He proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, earning his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) Degree in 1987. He later obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) Degree from the University of Lagos in 1991.

Driven by a passion for academic excellence and legal scholarship, Prof. Ortuanya travelled to the United States, where he earned his Doctorate Degree in Law from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

In academia, Prof. Ortuanya has distinguished himself across multiple institutions. He served as Associate Dean and Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, prior to his appointment as SSG. Over the years, he has contributed immensely to legal education and practice both locally and internationally.

Among his numerous academic and professional roles, he has served as:

  • Principal Partner at Word Chambers
  • Visiting Scholar at the Chicago School of Law (2003–2005)
  • Academic Staff at both the University of Nigeria and the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT)
  • Associate Dean, Faculty of Law, UNN (2007–2011)
  • Director, ESUT Law Clinic (2013–2016)
  • Dean, Faculty of Law, ESUT (2023–present)

Prof. Ortuanya is also a prolific legal author and scholar. His impressive bibliography includes notable works such as:

  • Law of Evidence in Nigeria – Practice and Procedure
  • HIV/AIDS Laws and Policy in Nigeria
  • Human Rights Law in Nigeria: Law, Practice and International Perspectives
  • Health Legislation in Nigeria
  • Fighting on the Side of Law
