Peter Obi Rejects Anambra Debt Claims, Disputes ₦2bn Ecological Fund Allegation

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has rejected claims that his administration left behind outstanding debts, unpaid salaries and pensions, contractor liabilities and a ₦2 billion ecological fund loan.

Obi, in a statement shared on social media, described the allegations by the Anambra State Government as false and said his administration cleared more than ₦35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears before leaving office in 2014.

According to the former governor, there were no outstanding salaries, gratuities or pensions owed by his administration at the point of handover. He also maintained that contractors whose projects had been duly executed and certified were not owed money.

Obi explains ₦2bn ecological fund

Addressing the disputed ecological fund, Obi said the ₦2 billion was released about three months before the end of his tenure to address the erosion crisis in Oko and Umuchiana.

He said he deliberately declined to spend the money because it had been earmarked for a specific project, insisting that it should remain available for the incoming administration.

Obi claimed that the funds were left intact in a First Bank account and that the balance was more than ₦2.13 billion at the time.

He further said the money was separate from the more than ₦75 billion in savings that he has previously said his administration left behind.

“If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning,” Obi said.
