Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days after doctors discovered a small, localised nodule in his lung during recent medical examinations.

The pontiff disclosed this in a message shared on his official X account, explaining that the nodule was detected at a very early stage and is well-localised.

According to him, his doctors recommended surgery to remove the growth, and he has decided to follow their medical advice.

“Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized,” he stated.

He added that the operation had already been scheduled to take place in the coming days.

The Pope also expressed gratitude to those offering him support and appealed for prayers as he prepares for the procedure.

“I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers,” he said.

Following the announcement, prayers and messages of support began appearing on social media, with well-wishers expressing hope for a successful operation and a speedy recovery.

The discovery of a lung nodule does not automatically mean that a person has cancer, as such growths can have different causes. However, doctors may recommend further investigations or removal depending on their characteristics and the patient’s medical circumstances.

The Vatican has not provided further details about the nature of the nodule or the specific surgical procedure in the statement shown.

As the pontiff prepares for the operation, Catholics and other well-wishers are expected to continue offering prayers for his health and recovery.
