Why do People seek the intervention of deities in their affairs instead of the intervention of God Almighty? According to Google, People seek the help of deities to find psychological comfort, address human limitations and request practical solutions to life’s challenges. So they believe.

However, in our society today, it is unarguable that people seek deities to settle personal scores, to punish their known and imaginary enemies, to recover stolen properties and to seek retributive justice. This is evident in the pronouncements made in public places before seeking the services of the deities and as a warning of its impending consequences to would be victims. This is particularly done as a precondition before the deity is employed and also as warning to would be victims.

Experience has shown that sometimes, after the pronouncements, some return stolen the properties to their owners for fear of the dare consequences, especially in the case of stolen properties. In other cases, they seek the intervention of the Chief Priests after divination on how to assuage the deity. The Priest would now advise on the necessary actions or preventive measures to be taken. Sometimes the Priest would advise the victims to seek divination. We have heard that cows and several other animal sacrifices were used to appease the deities but that is only before the hammer of its justice is struck.

According to one of the Priests (Atama Adoro), those killed by the mysterious deity must have their bodies exhumed and brought to the shrine. A ritual of purification involving the sacrifice of animals like goats and sometimes cows will be made. There are several other severe measures. This is however, dependent on the severity of the offense or evil committed by the said victim.

Nevertheless, the bigger problem is not even in the volume or size of the sacrificial animals meant to placate the deity. It is believed that before it is discovered, many souls, usually relations of the culprit would have been dead prematurely.

The Deity’s Justice:
The deity is believed to be a fiery god of justice whose justice must be executed no matter the victim.

We learn from historical antecedents that the justice of the feared deity is symbolized in merciless brutality. Sometimes a generation of the family of the culprit is obliterated before it is even discovered.

According to one of the Chief Priests, in the distant past, Alor (Ero) people suffered periodic attacks from neighbouring communities. Most of the time, these attacks were for acquisition of ‘Ero lands’ some other times, it could be for stealing of their children.

Consequent upon these crimes against them, they sought and acquired the powerful deity to protect their lands and children. The result of this is that anybody believed to have been killed by the deity, sometimes loose their properties. In other words, his or her properties were willingly taken to the shrine where it will remain forever.
