Saudi Arabia Executes Two Bangladeshis Over Alleged Indecent Act in Makkah Mosque
Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals after a court convicted them of committing what authorities described as an indecent act inside a mosque in the holy city of Makkah.
The executions took place on October 14, 2026, according to reports citing the Saudi Ministry of Interior. The individuals were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar.
According to the Saudi authorities, the two individuals were arrested following an incident inside a mosque in Makkah. An investigation was subsequently conducted, and the case was referred to a competent court, which convicted them and imposed the death penalty.
The authorities said the punishment was carried out following the completion of the judicial process and the final approval of the sentences.
However, the Saudi government has not publicly disclosed the precise nature of the act for which the two individuals were convicted. It also did not identify the specific mosque where the incident allegedly occurred.
Questions Surrounding the Executions
The case has attracted international attention amid claims that the two individuals were a married couple who were executed for kissing inside the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
However, these claims have not been established by the available official information.
Reports have also raised questions about whether the two individuals were married to each other, with accounts from the man’s family disputing the claim that the woman was his wife.
Consequently, the widely circulated narrative that the pair were newlyweds who were executed simply for sharing a kiss remains unverified.
Bangladesh Seeks Clarification
The executions have also raised concerns in Bangladesh, with reports indicating that the country’s diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia was not notified before the sentences were carried out.
Bangladeshi diplomatic officials have reportedly sought further information from Saudi authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding the case, including the legal proceedings and the offences for which the two nationals were convicted.
The lack of publicly available details has left questions about the specific allegations, the evidence presented in court and the circumstances leading to the death sentences.
Viral Execution Video Is Unrelated
Amid the controversy, a graphic video purportedly showing the execution of the two Bangladeshis has circulated online.
However, a fact-check by India Today found that the footage dates back to January 2015 and shows the execution of a Myanmar woman in Saudi Arabia in an unrelated case.
The video therefore does not provide evidence of how the two Bangladeshi nationals were executed.
The incident has renewed international discussion about capital punishment in Saudi Arabia and the treatment of foreign nationals facing serious criminal charges in the kingdom.
While the executions have been confirmed, several details circulating about the case, particularly claims that the individuals were a married couple executed for kissing, remain unverified.
