Pope Leo XIV Celebrates Mass in Hospital Following Lung Surgery
Pope Leo XIV has celebrated Holy Mass at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, days after undergoing surgery to remove a small nodule discovered in his lung.
The pontiff celebrated the Mass at noon on Friday, October 16, 2026, in a room designated for him on the hospital’s 10th floor.
Photographs from the celebration showed the Pope dressed in green liturgical vestments, standing before an altar as he led the Mass. He was also seen raising the Eucharist during the religious celebration.

The development comes after Pope Leo XIV disclosed that doctors had discovered a small, localised nodule in his lung during recent medical examinations.
According to the pontiff, the growth was detected at a very early stage and was well-localised. Following medical advice, he decided to undergo surgery to have it removed.
Before the procedure, the Pope expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he had received, entrusting himself to the prayers of the faithful.
His celebration of Mass at the hospital marks a significant moment as he continues to receive medical care following the procedure.
However, further details regarding his recovery, the outcome of the surgery and when he is expected to be discharged from the hospital have not been provided.
Catholics around the world continue to hope for the pontiff’s speedy recovery and return to his regular pastoral duties.
