Unicem Hospital Building Collapses After Landslide in Calabar

CALABAR, CROSS RIVER – August 14, 2026: A building at Unicem Hospital in Calabar, Cross River State, has collapsed following a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in the area.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after torrential rainfall reportedly caused significant soil erosion and destabilised the ground around the hospital.
Videos and images from the scene show a multi-storey section of the hospital building severely affected, with a large portion of the earth beneath and around the structure washed away.
The erosion has exposed parts of the building’s foundation, leaving sections of the structure dangerously close to the edge of the collapsed ground. Concrete debris and other materials can also be seen around the affected area.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the impact of heavy rainfall, erosion and landslides on buildings and infrastructure in Calabar, particularly structures located on vulnerable or unstable terrain.
There were reports of panic in the area following the collapse, as residents kept away from the affected structure amid concerns that further movement of the soil could cause additional damage.
As of Friday, August 14, 2026, there was no official confirmation of deaths or injuries linked to the incident. It was also not immediately clear how many people were inside the facility when the building gave way.
The full extent of the damage to the hospital and surrounding properties is yet to be established.
The incident comes amid renewed concerns over erosion and flooding during the rainy season in parts of Cross River State. Continued rainfall could potentially worsen already weakened areas, making assessment of nearby buildings and infrastructure important.
Emergency and relevant government authorities are expected to assess the affected site and determine the level of danger posed to surrounding structures.
